So, there are now over 1,013 published widgets (web APIs). In fact, if you compared Programmable Web’s list with Wigipedia’s, you’d probably get 1,200+. But, in terms of getting an idea of how to use them, reading write-ups of API after API gets a bit tedious. So, don’t. Go to Programmable’s Mashup Inventory to see these APIs in action. Blinkx, the engine powering video search on platforms such as Lycos, Ask and Microsoft, also owns the Adhoc video ad network. It places contextual ads in the videos it serves based on the words spoken in the clip. Scaling video search volumes helped more than double YOY revenues. That’s the good news. The not-so-good-news is that they’re losing money ($4M on $6.4M sales). How can a search engine make money placing ads in someone else’s content? Seems they have 32M video hours by 420 content partners such as People.com, CBS, and Getty.
